Just trying to polish my portrait skills. She's quick and a little messy - I was distracted when drawing my proper portrait by the fact I'm desperate to get back into Bleach, because I'm only on season 5.
Based on this wonderful cosplay:
Go check it out!!
I've gotten better since the last time I tried Semi Realism

Comments and Crit always welcome.
(And don't worry about the different signature folks, I'm trying out a new/snappier sig, so just a CD and the date )

I have to say, this is arguably the best semi-realistic Rukia portrait I've seen on DA EVER! I hope you realize how big a compliment this actually is, even if it were to seem like an ordinary or average comment otherwise.
You clearly understand the concept of brush economy, and all the other essential skills and qualities necessary for creating realistic looking people with an anime flavor. Her eyes are so human and realistic, but you didn't overemphasize the nose, so it's softer and draws attention to those eyes and lips. Shading is top notch. The expression and pose is really dynamic also, and befitting of Rukia, and I love her upturned eyebrows; it adds more of her character to the portrait.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to see more shading and value in her left arm, and in the hand specifically. I realize the light source is playing into this, and even in the original photo it is this way, so it doesn't need to be much darker, but some more shading would have added more depth and detail so that we're not paying attention to just her face. Also, while there is some natural foreshortening going on in her forearm area, the arm could use a little work and more width. If you look at the photo again, you'll see that her arm is contoured in the areas where pressure or resistance is being applied, and this doesn't carry over fully into your painting, making her arm seem more stiff in your version. All in all though, this is a minor scruple and doesn't take away from the awesome job on the face.
I also like that you didn't just try to copy the cosplayer's facial features; you actually made a different person with a different look, but used the attractive features as a nice template. This is something I'd like to see more artists doing. Many artists get hung up on the subject in their art looking as close to the reference as possible, which I suppose is ok if they're trying to draw that person specifically. For the intention of creating a fictional character, however, the template idea is more ideal, I think, since you're taking what you find attractive about the facial features of your reference models and applying that to the style in which you draw. I can see how you are doing that here, so I can appreciate it.
Great job! Keep up the good work! Next time I do a portrait of Rukia, I'll definitely try harder; this is inspiring! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
